The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Soldier’s Medal to Sergeant First Class Harvey L. Reed, Jr., United States Army, for heroism at the risk of life not involving conflict with an armed enemy. Sergeant First Class Reed distinguished himself by heroic action on 15 May 1970 while serving as a member of Advisory Team 16, United States Army Advisory Group, I Corps and Military Region 1, United States Military Assistance Command, Vietnam. On this date a gasoline stove exploded and started a fire inside the mobile advisory team bunker at Hau Duc District. Within seconds the fire spread to a second stove, ignited it, thereby spreading the fire throughout the entire forward section of the structure. Sergeant Reed, disregarding his own personal safety and realizing that if the fire spread any further that it would cause the ammunition, including fragmentation grenades standing in the bunker to explode, entered the burning inferno in an attempt to extinguish the fire. Ignoring numerous burns to his chest and arms, he entered the bunker time and time again until the fire was under control. Because of Sergeant Reed’s courageous act at the risk of his life, the fire was extinguished before the ammunition exploded, thus saving the lives of his team members and their military and personal property. Sergeant First Class Reed’s heroic actions were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
