The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Specialist Fourth Class Larry R. Locke (ASN: US-54441838), United States Army, for gallantry in action while engaged in military operations involving conflict with an armed hostile force on 10 November 1968 while serving as a medical aidman with Troop B, 1st Squadron, 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment, in the Republic of Vietnam. On this date in the vicinity of An Loc, Troop B was suddenly engaged in a fierce firefight with an unknown sized enemy force. At the beginning of the engagement one of the unit’s armored cavalry assault vehicles received two direct hits from enemy antitank rockets, inflicting fragmentation wounds to two of the crew members and critically wounding the driver. When he observed this, Specialist Locke immediately dismounted his vehicle and with complete disregard for his personal safety ran through the heavy enemy fire to aid his wounded comrades. Upon reaching the vehicle, he quickly removed the gravely wounded driver from his hatch, placed him in the rear of the vehicle and administered emergency first aid treatment. He then dashed back through the enemy fire to the command vehicle and informed the commanding officer of the troop that he was taking command of the vehicle. Once again braving the intense hostile fire, he returned to the damaged vehicle and drove it to the evacuation area where a helicopter was waiting to remove the casualties. After assisting in the evacuation, he returned to the battle area and continued to treat his wounded comrades until the enemy forces were repulsed. Specialist Four Locke’s unwavering devotion to duty, personal bravery and deep concern for the lives of his comrades in arms were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
