The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Specialist Fourth Class Robert R. Lee, United States Army, for gallantry in actions while engaged in military operations involving conflict with an armed hostile force on 10 March 1970 while serving as a loader with Company D, 1st Squadron, 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment, in the Republic of Vietnam. On this date the Troop was reacting to a friendly unit that had encountered heavy fighting with an undetermined size force of North Vietnamese soldiers. Upon arrival at the contact area, Specialist Lee’s vehicle was assaulting on line when they began to receive fire from a bunker complex. While sweeping through the area, his tank was hit by a rocket-propelled grenade, eliminating communications, disabling the main gun and injuring the tank commander. Specialist Lee, disregarding his own safety, dismounted his vehicle and assaulted the enemy bunkers with fragmentation grenades and his personal weapon. After destroying two enemy bunkers he returned to aid in the evacuation actions. Specialist Four Lee’s actions were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
