The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant First Class James F. Large, United States Army, for gallantry in action while engaged in military operations involving conflict with an armed hostile force on 31 March 1970 while serving as a platoon sergeant with Company D, 1st Squadron, 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment, in the Republic of Vietnam. On this date Troop B was involved in fierce combat with an enemy force when Company D was summoned to react to the contact. Sergeant Large’s platoon advanced into the battle area with his tank in front of the column. Almost immediately his vehicle was hit by recoilless rifle fire, wounding Sergeant Large. Still able to maintain control of his platoon, he instructed them to from on line and assault the enemy’s position. Sergeant Large remained with the platoon until the enemy position was destroyed. As a result of Sergeant Large’s devotion to duty, large enemy casualties were inflicted and numerous prisoners of war captured. Sergeant First Class Large’s actions were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
