The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Specialist Fourth Class Thomas Paul Landman, United States Army, for gallantry in action while engaged in military operations involving conflict with an armed hostile force on 7 June 1969 while serving as a tank gunner with Company H, 2d Squadron, 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment, in the Republic of Vietnam. On this date while conducting a reconnaissance operation southwest of An Loc, elements of the squadron came under intense small arms, automatic weapons and rocket-propelled grenade fire from an estimated enemy battalion. In the initial contact Specialist Landman’s tank received a direct hit, seriously wounding the vehicle commander. Seeing that his comrade was helplessly exposed to the hostile fusillade, Specialist Landman left his driver’s hatch and moved to the wounded man’s aid. While pulling the casualty to the relative safety of the rear deck of the tank, Specialist Landman was mortally wounded by an exploding rocket-propelled grenade. Specialist Four Landman’s’ courage, devotion to duty and concern for the welfare of his fellow soldier were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
