The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Captain (Armor) Ralph J. LaChance, United States Army, for gallantry in action while engaged in military operations involving conflict with an armed hostile force in the Republic of Vietnam. Captain LaChance distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous actions on 10 March 1970 while serving as the aviation section leader with the 3d Squadron, 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment, in the Republic of Vietnam. On this date, Captain LaChance was commanding the Command and Control Helicopter when he received a request from the troop commander for medical evacuation. Realizing that an evacuation helicopter was not readily available, Captain LaChance landed his craft despite the constant hail of enemy fire directed toward him. He dismounted his helicopter and ran to aid the wounded men. After assisting the men aboard his craft, he then ascended only to be met by a heavy barrage of ground fire. However, through his expert flying ability he was able to maneuver the craft from the area. Captain LaChance’s actions were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.

Headquarters, II Field Force, Vietnam, General Orders 3051 (July 27, 1970)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting a Second Bronze Oak Leaf Cluster in lieu of a Third Award of the Distinguished Flying Cross to Captain (Armor) Ralph J. LaChance, United States Army, for heroism while participating in aerial flight evidenced by voluntary actions above and beyond the call of duty on 17 May 1970 while serving as a pilot with the 3d Squadron, 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment, in the Republic of Vietnam. On this date Captain LaChance was flying in support of Troop K when it encountered an estimated company of North Vietnamese soldiers. Captain LaChance made several low level passes over the contact area, drawing the enemy fire and exposing the hostile force’s position to the friendly ground forces. The enemy soon broke contact, and elements of troop K began a sweep of the area only to be engaged again by the insurgents. With the platoon leader seriously injured and no medical evacuation helicopter available, Captain LaChance lowered his craft amid the deadly enemy fire to remove the wounded soldier. As he ascended, his helicopter again came under intense ground fire, but he successfully flew the craft from the area. Captain LaChance’s actions were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
