The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Armor) Peter A. Grundvig (ASN: OF-112183), United States Army, for gallantry in action involving conflict with an armed hostile force on 22 August 1968 while serving as platoon leader with Troop F, 2d Squadron, 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment, in the Republic of Vietnam. On this date, Lieutenant Grundvig’s platoon was conducting a sweep mission around the Government of Vietnam District Headquarters at Loc Ninh, when it came under intense enemy small arms, automatic weapons and antitank rocket fire from elements of the North Vietnamese Army. During the course of the battle Lieutenant Grundvig was seriously wounded in the face by exploding fragments which caused a temporary loss of sight in one eye. Although seriously wounded, he continued to lead his men against the enemy position. In order to obtain the advantage, Lieutenant Grundvig maneuvered his armored cavalry assault vehicle in front of the platoon and began applying a continuous and heavy volume of fire while leading an assault on the enemy stronghold. Only after the last remnants of enemy resistance had been eliminated and all of these men had received medical aid did Lieutenant Grundvig allow his wounds to be treated. Lieutenant Grundvig’s unwavering devotion to duty and leadership contributed measurably to the success of the mission and served as a source of inspiration for those with whom he served. First Lieutenant Grundvig’s personal bravery and deep concern for the welfare of his men were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
