Headquarters, II Field Force, Vietnam, General Orders No. 3870 (November 7, 1969)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Corps of Engineers) Michael G. Kuehn, United States Army, for gallantry in action while engaged in military operations involving conflict with an armed hostile force on 17 July 1969 while serving as a platoon leader with the 919th Engineer Company (Armored), 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment, in the Republic of Vietnam. On this date Lieutenant Kuehn was leading his platoon in a road clearing operation when word was received that a nearby supply convoy had been engaged by an enemy force. Reacting quickly and decisively, Lieutenant Kuehn led his force of three armored vehicles to the contact area. Ignoring the intense rocket-propelled grenades and automatic weapons fire directed at him, he remained in the center of the contact area returning fire with all available weapons. During the fierce firefight he spotted three seriously wounded personnel on the road and immediately moved to their aid. As he was administering medical aid a rocket-propelled grenade struck his position wounding him in the face. Ignoring his extremely painful wounds, he evacuated the others and then returned to his vehicle to resume the assault on the enemy fortifications. Lieutenant Kuehn’s courageous leadership resulted in thirteen enemy killed and one prisoner taken. Although his vision was impaired, he remained with his men to complete a sweep of the area which allowed the convoy to continue without further loss of men or equipment. First Lieutenant Kuehn’s outstanding leadership and deep concern for the welfare of his men were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
