The President of the United States of America, authorized by Executive Order 11046, 24 August 1962, takes pleasure in presenting the Bronze Star Medal with Combat “V” to Specialist Fourth Class Dennis L. Mikulenka (ASN: US-54721167), United States Army, for heroism in connection with military operations against an armed hostile force in the Republic of Vietnam. Specialist Fourth Class Mikulenka distinguished himself while serving as a Long Range Reconnaissance Patrol member with Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 3d Brigade, 4th Infantry Division.; On 5 November 1968, Specialist Fourth Class Mikulenka’s patrol team was on an observation mission northwest of Landing Zone OASIS when they made contact with several enemy soldiers. Reacting immediately, Specialist Mikulenka scrambled for cover as he engaged the enemy and provided protective fire for his exposed team leader. As eight enemy soldiers were assaulting the team’s position from the east, Specialist Mikulenka left the protection of his position to activate two Claymore Mines. His heroic actions enabled the team to reach the extraction helicopter safely. Specialist Fourth Class Mikulenka’s courageous acts, initiative, and exemplary devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
