The President of the United States of America, authorized by Executive Order 11046, 24 August 1962, takes pleasure in presenting the Bronze Star Medal with Combat “V” to Staff Sergeant David Cullum, United States Army, for heroism in connection with military operations against a hostile force in Iraq in support of Operation IRAQI FREEDOM. Staff Sergeant Cullum distinguished himself while serving as a Bradley Commander with Bravo Troop, 3d Squadron, 7th Cavalry, 3d Infantry Division. On the evening of 25 March 2003, Bravo Troop 3/7 Cav was ambushed by Iraqi forces while moving north. Staff Sergeant Cullum displayed courage under fire by returning to the ambush point through incessant enemy fire to recover the crews from two burning tanks. On site, Staff Sergeant Cullum directed his crew to place themselves between the enemy ambush and the burning tanks. Looking back Staff Sergeant Cullum realized that the injured personnel needed help with first aid. He sprinted 200 meters to where the injured personnel had been dropped, providing first aid and then organized a detail to begin transporting all friendly forces back to friendly vehicles, all the while in the middle of enemy ambush and a dust storm that severely restricted visibility. After carrying an injured crewman to safety, Staff Sergeant Cullum ran back to rescue a crewman still trapped in the burning tank. Upon arrival he suppressed the enemy with small arms, destroyed an enemy bunker with an M-203 round and helped carry the rescued tankers to safety. After all vehicles had secured all friendly forces, everyone headed south to a secure rally point, where Staff Sergeant Cullum provided first aid until medics arrived. Staff Sergeant Cullum’s personal bravery, tactical maneuvering, and exemplary devotion to duty are in keeping with the highest traditions of the military and reflect great credit upon himself, 3d Squadron, 7th U.S. Cavalry “GARRYOWEN,” 3d Infantry Division and the United States Army.
