Headquarters, 1st Infantry Division, General Orders No. 13075 (December 12, 1968)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Specialist Fourth Class Mack Carl Easley (ASN: RA-15978825), United States Army, for gallantry in action while engaged in military operations involving conflict with an armed hostile force in the Republic of Vietnam. On this date, Specialist Easley was serving as a Medical Aidman with Headquarters and Service Battery, 8th Battalion, 6th Artillery at First Support Base RITA near Tong Le Chon. At approximately 0330 hours, the friendly position was subjected to an intense hostile rocket and mortar fire, as well as a fierce ground assault which resulted in the penetration of the northwest side of the perimeter. With complete disregard for his personal safety, Specialist Easley immediately rushed through the hail of incoming rounds to aid several of his wounded comrades. Throughout the entire attack he continuously exposed himself to the relentless enemy fire while finding, evacuating and treating numerous friendly casualties. As he discovered each new wounded man in the open, Specialist Easley moved him to the medical aid station and quickly administered first aid. Although wounded himself, he continuously informed the battery commander of the casualty count and the severity of each individual’s wounds. The extraordinary courage and selfless determination of Specialist Easley throughout the extremely hazardous situation were major factors insuring that all of the wounded personnel received prompt medical attention. Specialist Fourth Class Easley’s unquestionable valor in close combat against numerically superior hostile forces was in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflects great credit upon himself, the 1st Infantry Division, and the United States Army.
