Headquarters, 2d Infantry Division, General Orders No. 428 (November 11, 1952)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Corporal William A. Harris (ASN: RA-20829473), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company G, 38th Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy on 27 September 1952 in the vicinity of Chorwon, North Korea. On that date, Corporal Harris was serving as squad leader with the “Raider Platoon” whose mission was to attack enemy positions behind “T-Bone Ridge” and take a prisoner. As they neared the objective, they were suddenly subjected to intense grenade, automatic weapons and small arms fire. During the ensuing fire fight, Corporal Harris was wounded but continued to lead his squad in their assault on the enemy emplacements. When the order to withdraw was given, Corporal Harris upon learning that his platoon sergeant and assistant platoon sergeant had been wounded, immediately took charge, directing the withdrawal and supervising the evacuation of the wounded. Checking to see that all the men were off the hill, he, with another member of the platoon, picked up a seriously wounded comrade and carried him to an enemy anti-tank trench which was the best route of evacuation. He remained at the anti-tank trench which approximately twelve feet deep and eight feet wide, and continued to help the wounded across until exhausted. Despite his wounds and exhaustion, Corporal Harris, carrying a wounded comrade, continued to lead the platoon in a successful withdrawal. The gallantry in action displayed by Corporal Harris reflects great credit upon himself and the military service.
