The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class George E. Edwards (ASN: RA-16249070), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company G, 23d Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy on 13 September 1950 in the vicinity of Changnyong, Korea. On that date Private Edwards was a member of a combat patrol probing enemy lines to the company’s front. The patrol was subjected to intense hostile mortar and machine gun fire and four members of the patrol fell wounded. Private Edwards immediately dashed to his wounded comrades, rendered first aid, and then, still under the withering enemy fire which was sweeping the terrain, helped each of the wounded soldiers to the safety of the company’s perimeter. His selfless action and his unconcern for his personal safety resulted in saving the lives of his four wounded comrades. The gallantry displayed by Private Edwards reflects the highest great upon himself is in keeping with the fine traditions of the military service.
