The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Infantry) Walter Hollis Broyles (ASN: 0-2207705), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company K, 9th Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 9 September 1952 in the vicinity of Chorwon, North Korea. On that date, Lieutenant Broyles, a Platoon Leader led his patrol against a group of heavily fortified enemy positions. Although painfully wounded, he continued to expose himself while endeavoring to evacuate the wounded, disperse his en and direct their fire. Before withdrawing, he was again wounded by an enemy shell. Although suffering intense pain, he refused immediate evacuation and directed his men in a successful withdrawal to friendly lines. His fearless deeds were directly responsible for the accomplishment of the mission and the safe return of the patrol, keeping casualties at a minimum. The gallantry in action displayed by Lieutenant Broyles reflects great credit upon himself and the military service.
