The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private William H. Brown (ASN: US-53049093), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company K, 9th Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, from 2 and 9 September 1952 in the vicinity of Chorwon, North Korea. On the first date, a patrol, of which he was a member, was attacking a well-entrenched enemy hill position. Advancing to within 60 yards of the objective, Private Brown was fired upon by several enemy soldiers. Without thought of personal safety, he advanced over the fire swept slope of the hill and charged an enemy bunker, completely disabling it. Upon being forced to withdraw for regrouping, the patrol leader was discovered to be missing. Private Brown, although wounded, volunteered to return to the fire swept area and search for the missing man. The heavy enemy fire forced him to abandon the search and rejoin his unit a short time later. On the latter date he was a member of a patrol engaged in a 20 minute fire fight with the enemy. During this action, Private Brown personally accounted for 6 enemy dead. After expending all of his ammunition and throwing some 20 grenades, he voluntarily took up an automatic rifle and aided in providing covering fire for the withdrawal of his unit. The gallantry in action displayed by Private Brown reflects great credit upon himself and the military service.
