The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Infantry) Rutherford V. Brice (ASN: 0-2203295), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company C, 23d Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy on 1 August 1952 in the vicinity of Chorwon, Korea. On that date, Lieutenant Brice was Executive Officer of Company C, which was in bitter combat with a determined hostile force. The enemy had just launched a devastating barrage of artillery and mortar fire in which the Company Commander was wounded and evacuated. Lieutenant Brice, with complete disregard for personal safety, voluntarily moved out into the fire swept area to maintain command of the company. On numerous occasions while under direct enemy fire, he moved among his men shouting words of encouragement and praise, thus keeping the unit well organized at all times. This act of valor was the determining factor in the success of the unit and served as an inspiration to all who observed him. The courageous actions of Lieutenant Brice have won the respect of all members of his command and reflects great credit upon himself and the military service.
