Headquarters, 2d Infantry Division, General Orders No. 31 (January 19, 1952)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Private Douglas R. Boyle (ASN: US-56087172), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company A, 38th Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy on 13 October 1951 in the vicinity of Mundung-ni, Korea. On this date Company A had the mission of assaulting and securing a strongly fortified enemy-held hill. During this attack, as his platoon advanced in a flanking movement, Private Boyle, completely disregarding his own safety, moved through the intense hostile fire with fixed bayonet. Upon observing several enemy soldiers in a bunker, Private Boyle stormed the position, killing all of its occupants. He continued his action, inflicting numerous casualties upon the enemy and inspiring his comrades to greater heights of daring until he was fatally wounded by enemy fire. His heroic and selfless act aided directly in the successful completion of his unit’s mission. The gallantry in action and self-sacrificing spirit displayed by Private Boyle on this occasion reflect great credit upon himself and the military service.
