Headquarters, 2d Infantry Division, General Orders No. 829 (December 7, 1951)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Herman Bowling (ASN: RA-15299816), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company F, 23d Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 11 October 1951 in the vicinity of Indang-ni, Korea. On this date Company F was in the attack upon a heavily fortified enemy-held hill. As Private Bowling, an automatic rifleman, fearlessly moved through the determined hostile fire he was wounded. His squad leader, not knowing of this incident, motioned him to advance forward to a position from where he could place more effective fire on the enemy. Private Bowling, realizing the importance of his weapon’s fire power and although suffering extreme pain, crawled up to the designated position and commenced firing. In the course of this action, his squad leader noticed his wound and instructed Private Bowling to relax until a medical aidman could reach him. As his unit advanced in the assault and although left behind, he tenaciously employed devastating fire on the enemy, enabling the friendly elements to secure their objective. Despite the fact that he was suffering from shock and loss of blood he tried to rejoin his squad but, in the attempt, fell unconscious. The gallantry in action and outstanding devotion to duty displayed by Private Bowling on this occasion reflects great credit upon himself and the military service.
