The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Master Sergeant David L. Blaylock (ASN: US-53013491), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company A, 9th Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 30 August 1951 in the vicinity of Kobangsa-ni, Korea. On this date Company A was attacking a heavily fortified enemy-held hill. Sergeant Blaylock, platoon sergeant, courageously led his men forward until they were within their objective. At this time intense enemy automatic weapons fire pinned down the platoon, making it impossible to move to either flank and simultaneously heavy enemy artillery fire fell in the vicinity of the unit. Sergeant Blaylock, immediately radioed for smoke rounds to conceal his men in a withdrawal. Exposing himself to enemy fire, he moved among his men giving directions and words of encouragement. While supervising the withdrawal and aiding in the evacuation of the wounded, Sergeant Blaylock was painfully wounded. Completely disregarding his well being, he refused to leave his position until his unit had withdrawn safely. The gallantry and outstanding leadership demonstrated by Sergeant Blaylock reflect great credit upon himself and the military service.
