The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Lieutenant Colonel (Infantry) George W. Black (ASN: 0-32192), United States Army, for gallantry in action as Commanding Officer, 1st Battalion, 9th Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 7 October 1951 in the vicinity of Yanggu, Korea. On this date the 1st Battalion was engaged in a desperate struggle with a numerically superior enemy force. Leading elements, fighting their way toward the objective, suffered numerous casualties, resulting in confusion and disorder among friendly troops. Colonel Black, completely exposing himself to enemy observation and fire, left his position of comparative safety to reorganize the depleted ranks. His calm manner instilled confidence within the officers and men of his unit and encouraged them to hold against great odds. The inspiring and aggressive leadership exhibited by Colonel Black rallied his men to overcome the enemy strongholds and secure their objective. The gallantry in action and selfless devotion to duty displayed by Colonel Black on this occasion reflects great credit upon himself and the military service.
