The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Captain (Infantry) Clarence E. Bishop (ASN: 0-1317261), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company L, 9th Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy on 18 July 1953 in the vicinity of Yugong-Ni, North Korea. At approximately 0300 hours on that date, the enemy unleashed a savage mortar and artillery barrage followed by a fanatic enemy assault upon the defensive positions of Captain Bishop’s company. Realizing that the numerically superior enemy force was concentrating its assault on one platoon’s position, Captain Bishop immediately organized a counterattacking force and led them across the intensely shelled terrain toward the threatened area. Remaining completely exposed to the enemy fire, he adjusted accurate friendly supporting fire as he moved and forcefully directed his men. Upon reaching the besieged positions, Captain Bishop, with complete disregard for personal safety, led his two squad force in an aggressive assault against the estimated 200 hostile troops. In the ensuing conflict that raged through the trenches, Captain Bishop repeatedly exposed himself to the imminent dangers while directing his men. As a result of his brilliant and courageous leadership, the enemy attack was finally repulsed and the friendly positions secured. The gallantry in action displayed by Captain Bishop reflects great credit upon himself and the military service.
