Headquarters, 2d Infantry Division, General Orders No. 834 (December 8, 1951)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private Nellard R. Berve (ASN: RA-19387835), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company F, 38th Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 10 October 1951 in the vicinity of Imokchong, Korea. O that date Company F launched an attack on a strategic and well-fortified enemy-held hill. During this assault several of Private Berve’s comrades were wounded by exploding mortar rounds and were lying in an exposed position under hostile observation and fire. Seeing the helpless men at the mercy of the enemy and facing certain death, Private Berve left his position to aid the wounded men. Although wounded himself, he picked up a wounded man and carried him back to safety. In the course of this act his unit was forced to withdraw, thus increasing the danger of his journey. Despite the fact, Private Berve made repeated trips over the hazardous terrain until his wounded comrades were withdrawn to positions of safety. Although wounded again, he did not reveal the seriousness of his wounds until all of his comrades were cared for. His selfless action and devotion to duty undoubtedly saved the lives of his comrades. The gallantry in action displayed by Private Berve on this occasion reflects great credit upon himself and the military service.
