The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Infantry) George N. Bennett (ASN: 0-436811), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company C, 9th Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy on 7 October 1951 in the vicinity of Kong-dong, Korea. On this date Lieutenant Bennett’s unit spearheaded an attack on vital enemy-held positions on Hill 867. As the assault progressed, friendly forces were subjected to an intense fire from enemy mortars, automatic weapons and small arms, which resulted in numerous casualties. The loss of many key personnel caused the attack to falter and come to a halt. Realizing the existing state of confusion and disorder, Lieutenant Bennett unhesitatingly exposed himself while advancing over the fire-swept terrain, in an effort to reorganize the remnants of friendly forces. As he led them once again into the attack, his men, inspired by the example of individual heroism, succeeded in routing the enemy and securing the objective. Lieutenant Bennett’s example of aggressive leadership and selfless devotion to duty aided immeasurably in the successful operation for HEARTBREAK RIDGE by the division. The gallantry in action displayed by Lieutenant Bennett is in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service.
