The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Corporal John L. Belhumeur (ASN: RA-31259780), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company F, 9th Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy on 18 December 1952 in the vicinity of Chorwon, North Korea. Late in the afternoon of that date, positions held by Company F, 9th Infantry Regiment were attacked by three enemy tanks from long range camouflaged positions. Corporal Belhumeur quickly discerned the emplacement’s location and, despite knowing the Observation Post to be their primary objective due to the heavy concentration of fire upon it and with complete disregard for personal safety, ran to the Observation Post to assist in directing counter fire against the enemy. Although he was not a member of the forward observing party and could have easily taken shelter in a secure place, he chose to remain at his post and successfully assisted in directing friendly artillery fire until the Observation Post was hit by an enemy round and he was mortally wounded. His heroic actions materially lessened friendly casualties in their effort to thwart the enemy’s mission. The gallantry in action and consummate devotion to performance of duty displayed by Corporal Belhumeur reflect great credit upon himself and the military service.
