Headquarters, 2d Infantry Division, General Orders No. 240 (May 27, 1952)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Master Sergeant Harry Baxter-Green (ASN: RA-11172739), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company E (then Ranger Platoon), 9th Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy on 20 April 1952 20 April 1952 in the vicinity of Kumhwa, Korea, against an overwhelming number of armed, well dug in enemy troops. On that date, the Ranger Platoon, in which Sergeant Baxter-Green was Squad Leader, was proceeding along its route with the mission of killing or capturing as many of the enemy as possible. Upon sighting a series of hostile bunkers, Sergeant Baxter-Green led his Squad through them in search of enemy troops. Upon entering a bunker which was inhabited by the enemy, he immediately engaged them in combat, killing one with his bayonet. He then withdrew from the bunker, and, securing a satchel charge, threw it into the emplacement, silencing the murderous enemy fire which had grown in intensity. Suddenly, a superior hostile force placed devastating fire upon the Platoon from all directions, forcing a withdrawal. With utter disregard for his own safety, Sergeant Baxter-Green placed himself in a position to cover the withdrawal, thus drawing the enemy fire from the rest of the patrol. His actions were largely responsible for many enemy casualties, and the successful completion of the mission. The gallantry in action displayed by Sergeant Baxter-Green reflects the highest credit upon himself and the military service.
