Headquarters, 2d Infantry Division, General Orders No. 851 (December 13, 1951)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Sergeant Rush W. Barrett (ASN: RA-7006785), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company K, 38th Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 3 September 1951 in the vicinity of Mandae-ri, Korea. On that date, during Company K’s assault on a well-fortified enemy-held hill, Sergeant Barrett was seriously wounded. Ignoring his painful wounds he continued to lead his men toward their objective until they were pinned down by intense small arms, automatic weapons, and grenade fire from the well-entrenched and fanatically determined enemy force. Sergeant Barrett, disregarding his personal safety and the hostile fire, fearlessly exposed himself as he assaulted the enemy emplacement and succeeded in destroying it, after which he died from his previously sustained wounds. Through his courageous actions his unit was able to continue the attack and secure its objective. The gallantry in action and selfless devotion to duty displayed by Sergeant Barrett reflects great credit upon himself and the military service.
