The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Private Paul Eugene Baker (ASN: RA-16314093), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company G, 23d Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy on 15 February 1951 in the vicinity of Chipyong-ni, Korea. Company G, under overwhelming enemy pressure, was forced to withdraw for a distance of approximately 400 yards. With complete disregard for his personal safety, Private Baker remained in position to cover the withdrawal of the company. He fearlessly exposed himself to draw hostile fire and thus to locate enemy positions, upon which he poured deadly rifle fire. He steadfastly remained in place, firing upon the advancing enemy until, under the weight of overwhelming numbers, his position was overrun. When the company later counterattacked and regained the lost ground Private Baker was found dead in his foxhole with a dead enemy beside him. The gallantry and selfless devotion to duty displayed by Private Baker reflect the highest credit upon himself are in keeping with the fine traditions of the military service.
