The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Airman’s Medal to Sergeant Steven E. Zahakaylo, United States Air Force, for heroism involving risk of life at King Salmon Airport, Alaska, on 18 January 1990. On that date, Sergeant Zahakaylo came to the aid of a co-worker who was being electrocuted with 7,200 volts of electricity. With complete disregard for his own safety, and despite the possibility of electrocution to himself, Sergeant Zahakaylo unhesitatingly kicked the energized electrical wire from the hand of his co-worker, and immediately began cardiopulmonary resuscitation. Although injured himself, Sergeant Zahakaylo administered emergency medical aid to the victim and refused personal treatment until his co-worker was prepared for transport to a medical facility. The exemplary courage and heroism displayed by Sergeant Zahakaylo reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Air Force.
