The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Airman’s Medal to Staff Sergeant Lawrence Stephen Burger, United States Air Force, for heroism involving voluntary risk of life on Interstate 15 in the California desert, 60 miles from the Nevada border, on the evening of 12 May 1989. On that date, Sergeant Burger voluntarily risked his life while stopping to render assistance to a 72-year-old Hesperia resident, the driver of an overturned vehicle. Ignoring his personal safety from the risk of explosion of leaking fuel, Sergeant Burger rushed to the overturned car, forced open the door, pulled the trapped driver to safety, arranged for first aid, and called for an ambulance. Sergeant Burger’s quick thinking saved the life of the motorist. By his courageous action and humanitarian regard for his fellowman, Sergeant Burger has reflected great credit upon himself and the United States Air Force.
