The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Airman’s Medal to Technical Sergeant Jeffrey G. Weddle, United States Air Force, for heroism involving voluntary risk of life at Peru, Indiana, on 27 November 1989. On that date, at approximately 2045 hours, a fire broke out in the resident of Sergeant Troy S. Smith and family. Mrs. Smith called the Peru Fire Department and her neighbor, Sergeant Weddle, since her husband was not at home. Sergeant Weddle arrived at the Smith residence seconds later making his first priority the safety of Mrs. Smith and her sons, ages three and three months. After ensuring everyone was out of the house, Sergeant Weddle re-entered the residence to battle the fire. He used a broom to beat down the flames and then closed the gas valve to extinguish the fire. Thanks to Sergeant Weddle’s prompt action, Sergeant Smith’s residence received only minor damage. By his courageous action and humanitarian regard for his fellowman, Sergeant Weddle has reflected great credit upon himself and the United States Air Force.
