Headquarters, 2d Infantry Division, General Orders No. 20 (January 25, 1951)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Infantry) Eugene C. Burk (ASN: 0-1290543), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company I, 38th Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy on 4 September 1950 near Yongsan, Korea. On the night of this date he was the leader of a platoon whose defensive positions on Hill 183 were being subjected to a particularly heavy enemy attack. During this action he was wounded by the explosion of an enemy hand grenade. Realizing what the loss of leadership, in the midst of an attack, would mean to his platoon, he refused to be evacuated. Despite his painful wounds, he continued to direct and encourage his men, which was a major factor in their ultimate success in routing the enemy. Only after the enemy had been repulsed would he allow himself to be evacuated. The complete unselfishness and gallantry displayed by Lieutenant Burk on this occasion reflect the highest credit upon himself are in keeping with the fine traditions of the military service.
