The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant Alfred M. Bukaty (ASN: RA-14273732), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of 1st Airborne Ranger Company, 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy on 2 April 1951 in the vicinity of Sochi-ri, Korea. On the night of that date, his unit was attempting to infiltrated through enemy lines to strike a suspected enemy command post. The assault team of which Sergeant Bukaty was leader was sent forward to cover a dangerous draw. At the had of his team, he advanced to the draw and, as he noticed enemy movement, he deployed his men and engaged the enemy in a firefight. Realizing that firepower alone would not neutralize the well-concealed enemy positions, Sergeant Bukaty left his place of cover and dashed forward in a single-handed assault, firing his rifle and hurling hand grenades. His daring charge killed several of the enemy and threw the remainder into retreat. As a member of his team stopped to take documents from a dead enemy, two enemy who had remained concealed in the area arose from their position and attempted to fire upon him with sub-machine guns. Sergeant Bukaty immediately exposed himself to draw the enemy’s attention and, while his comrade took cover behind a rock, engaged the two soldiers with rifle fire, killing one and wounding the other. He then kept the wounded enemy pinned down with rifle fire while his comrade maneuvered and killed the enemy with hand grenades. The gallantry displayed by Sergeant Bukaty reflects the highest great upon himself is in keeping with the fine traditions of the military service.
