The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting a Bronze Oak Leaf Cluster in lieu of a Second Award of the Silver Star to Captain (Infantry) Cornell B. Bryhn (ASN: 0-1287831), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company E, 23d Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy on 1 September 1950 in the vicinity of Changnyong, Korea. On that date his company had been assigned the mission of seizing and securing three enemy-held hills on the right flank of his battalion. After launching his assault, Captain Bryhn discovered that his company was meeting with heavy enemy resistance. With total disregard for his personal safety he moved from one attacking element to another, encouraging his troops by his fearless example to continue the attack. Throughout the engagement he personally directed the movements of his unit and the fire of his automatic weapons until the objective was seized and secured. His heroic leadership was a source of great inspiration to his men and was instrumental in the successful accomplishment of his company’s mission. The gallantry displayed on this occasion by Captain Bryhn reflects great credit upon himself and is in keeping with the fine traditions of the military service.
