The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Corporal Gerald P. Bruno (ASN: US-51063828), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company D, 9th Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, gallantry in action against the enemy on 27 August 1951 in the vicinity of Yanggu, Korea. On this date Company D encountered a numerically superior enemy force, which was inflicting numerous casualties upon friendly troops. Corporal Bruno, radio operator for the attached recoilless rifle platoon, immediately left his position to aid the fallen men. Selecting an open position above the ridge line, completely exposed to enemy observation and fire, he laid a field of protecting fire. His accurate and constant stream of fire neutralized the enemy positions and enabled medical aid men to evacuate the wounded. Corporal Bruno then braved a deadly concentration of fire to assist a man whom medical personnel were unable to reach. Crawling over treacherous terrain, he aided the wounded man to safety. The gallantry and devotion to duty demonstrated by Corporal Bruno on this occasion reflect great credit upon himself and the military service.
