Headquarters, 2d Infantry Division, General Orders No. 92 (May 1, 1951)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Private First Class Bruce Marlin Broyles (ASN: RA-15281063), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company G, 23d Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy on 15 February 1951 in the vicinity of Chipyong-ni, Korea. Company G, under overwhelming enemy pressure, was forced to withdraw for a distance of approximately 400 yards. With complete disregard for his personal safety, Private Broyles remained in position to cover the withdrawal of the company. Under intense fire from the rapidly advancing enemy, he fearlessly stood fast engaging them with deadly fire until, under the weight of overwhelming numbers, his position was overrun. When the company later counterattacked and regained the lost ground Private Broyles was found dead in his foxhole with two dead enemy beside him. The gallantry and selfless devotion to duty displayed by Private Broyles reflect the highest credit upon himself are in keeping with the fine traditions of the military service.
