The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant First Class William E. Brown (ASN: RA-19237926), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Tank Company, 23d Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy on 27 May 1951, in the vicinity of Kombal-li, Korea. On that date he was a member of a battalion combat team moving up the Soyang-gang River bed. When the tanks had proceeded to a point where they were overlooking the infantry, an estimated 100 enemy troops dug-in to the southeast opened fire on the tanks with small arms and automatic weapons. The first volley wounded eight infantrymen and forced the remainder to take cover. Seeing that the infantrymen were unable to recover the wounded because of the intense enemy fire, he immediately left the cover of his tank and removed the wounded to a covered position behind his tank where he administered emergency first aid. The gallant conduct of Sergeant Brown on this occasion was instrumental in saving the lives of several men, and reflects great credit upon himself and upholds the highest traditions of the Military Service of the United States.
