The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant Jack D. Brown (ASN: 0-537506), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Heavy Mortar Company, 38th Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy on 26 November 1950 in the vicinity of Somin-dong, Korea. On that date his company’s defensive positions were subjected to a fierce attack by a numerically superior enemy force. After engaging in a firefight, the enemy breached the defenses and orders were received to withdraw. Lieutenant Brown calmly rallied his men, ordered all equipment loaded on vehicles and led the column to the rear. The route of withdrawal was covered by the enemy who was located on commanding ground and subjected the withdrawing elements to heavy machine gun and small arms fire. An ammunition truck received a direct hit, exploded and caused two vehicles to be immobilized, blocking the further withdrawal. Without hesitation Lieutenant Brown reconnoitered new firing positions, set up three mortars, organized crews for them and established a fire direction center as well as communications with the supporting artillery batter. His decisive, courageous action and fearless leadership in this critical situation were responsible for delaying the enemy and were vital factors in the safe withdrawal of our forces. The gallantry displayed on this occasion by Lieutenant Brown reflects the highest credit upon himself is in keeping with the fine traditions of the military service.
