Headquarters, 2d Infantry Division, General Orders No. 63 (October 12, 1950)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class George W. Brown (ASN: RA-14218781), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company A, 38th Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy on 27 August 1950 at Hyong-Pung, Korea. In the early morning hours of 27 August 1950. Private Brown was an automatic rifleman of a reconnaissance patrol in force against an enemy strong point located on Hill 409. As the patrol closed with the enemy they were subjected to intense automatic weapons fire and elements of the patrol were trapped and pinned down. Discovering that his position did not offer a good field of fire he crawled forward to a better position. As he moved forward he noticed a wounded soldier being dragged into the enemy positions. He immediately opened fire, exposing himself to do so, killed the enemy, and carried his wounded comrade to safety. He then continued to fire his automatic rifle, exposing himself at all times to intense hostile fire in order to deliver his own fire effectively. His accurate and steady fire was instrumental in pinning down the enemy and allowed the patrol to break out of the trap. During the withdrawal of the patrol to friendly lines, he moved up to the front and acted as a scout. The complete disregard for personal safety and intrepid courage displayed by Private Brown on this occasion reflect great credit upon himself and are in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service.
