The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant Charles R. Brown (ASN: RA-16261877), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company C, 72d Tank Battalion, 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy on 18 May 1951, in the vicinity of Chaun-ni, Korea. Sergeant Brown was a member of a tank platoon that had the mission of breaking a roadblock and protecting the withdrawal of the infantry. In performing this duty Sergeant Brown came upon wounded men who were members of our infantry. Disregarding heavy enemy small arms and mortar fire, Sergeant Brown dismounted from the protective armor of his tank on three separate occasions to help the wounded into his tank. On one such mission he made three trips 200 yards up a hill under very heavy enemy fire, in great peril of his own life, to carry three wounded infantrymen to the safety of his tank. Sergeant Brown’s disregard for his own personal safety in order to aid wounded comrades reflects great credit upon himself and upholds the highest traditions of the Military Service of the United States.
