    Headquarters, 2d Infantry Division, General Orders No. 118 (December 31, 1950) & No. 36 (February 10, 1951)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to First Lieutenant Bruce Bromley, Jr. (ASN: 0-60628), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Heavy Mortar Company, 9th Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy on 31 August 1950 and 1 September 1950, near Agok, Korea. Lieutenant Bromley was a forward observer accompanying a platoon of heavy mortars emplaced along the Naktong River, when the enemy attacked in fanatical and overwhelming numbers cutting off and surrounding the platoon. Undaunted, he led the platoon through the enemy lines to friendly troops. Reaching the safety of friendly lines, he instructed the platoon to take up a defensive position while he remained at the front line position. Noting that units of a battalion were entrapped forward of his position, he assisted in organizing a task force composed of stragglers, cooks, clerks, and one tank. Once the force was organized, he moved forward immediately, leading an assault against a firmly entrenched enemy. His brave and unselfish act so inspired those around him that the attack moved forward and was successful in overrunning the enemy and liberating the trapped men. He remained in the forefront of his group, time and time again leading local assaults on the enemy positions through hails of fire and hand grenades. During the latter phases of this action he was mortally wounded. His gallant and unselfish deeds were an inspiration to all those around him and reflect great credit upon himself and the Armed Forces of the United States.
