The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Russell L. Broadus (ASN: RA-13275735), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company I, 9th Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy on 25 May 1951, in the vicinity of Taeyochang, Korea. On that day Company I had the mission of driving the enemy from well-entrenched positions on Hill 800. As the company approached the hill, it was subjected to intense enemy fire which pinned the men down and threatened to foil the entire attack. Immediately two squads were ordered forward. Private Broadus, a member of one of these squads, with complete disregard for his safety, advanced through the heavy enemy fire, leading his squad in the attack. Private Broadus calmly stood in the face of the fire, firing his rifle with devastating effect on the enemy. After reaching the top of the hill, the squad prepared for a counterattack. Before reinforcements could arrive, the enemy launched a furious attack, driving the two squads from the hill. Again his squad was ordered to attack along with the rest of the company. With complete disregard for his own safety, Private Broadus led his squad into the treacherous enemy fire. This time, due to his courageous leadership, the hill was secured and the enemy routed. Private Broadus’ gallantry in action reflects great credit upon himself and upholds the highest traditions of the Military Service of the United States.
