Headquarters, 2d Infantry Division, General Orders No. 576 (October 6, 1951)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Infantry) Richard O. Bright (ASN: 0-1327607), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company C, 38th Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 1 September 1951 in the vicinity of Mandae-ri, Korea. On this date, during an attack on an enemy-held hill, Lieutenant Bright’s platoon spearheaded the assault. Throughout the attack, Lieutenant Bright remained with the lead squad, fearlessly exposing himself to intense enemy fire, while directing devastating friendly firepower upon the enemy. Although seriously wounded, Lieutenant Bright refused to be evacuated and continued on with his platoon until the final objective had been secured. His aggressiveness resulted in heavy enemy casualties. The gallantry in action displayed by Lieutenant Bright reflect great credit upon himself and the military service.
