Headquarters, 2d Infantry Division, General Orders No. 683 (November 5, 1951)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant Jimmy C. Braswell (ASN: RA-14354654), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company I, 38th Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 23 May 1951 in the vicinity of Chul-gol, Korea. On that date, during an attack on an enemy-held hill, Sergeant Braswell, a machine gunner, kept the enemy force pinned down with continuous fire, enabling his unit to advance. Upon reaching the crest of the hill, his assistant gunner was killed but he continued in the attack, inflicting numerous casualties upon the enemy, until his ammunition was exhausted. During the ensuing action, hostile forces launched a counterattack, forcing his unit to withdraw. Sergeant Braswell, refusing to leave the hill, secured an automatic rifle from one of his wounded comrades and immediately fought a rear guard action while the wounded men were being evacuated. Disregarding the intense enemy fire directed at him, Sergeant Braswell remained in his position until his unit had withdrawn, and during his withdrawal he was wounded by enemy shrapnel. The gallantry in action and devotion to duty displayed by Sergeant Braswell on this occasion reflect great credit upon himself and the military service.
