Headquarters, 2d Infantry Division, General Orders No. 242 (June 29, 1951)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Field Artillery) Charles S. Brantley (ASN: 0-62011), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Battery A, 38th Field Artillery Battalion, 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy on 16 and 17 May 1951, in the vicinity of Tongsan-myon, Korea. He was assigned as Forward Observer with a rifle company, which was then in front of the main line acting as a patrol base. At about 2100 hours, the company was attacked by a numerically superior enemy force. He immediately brought fire on the enemy and aided in repulsing the attack. The enemy again attacked at about 2300 hours in increased numbers. During the height of this attack he left his position and personally reorganized and brought back on line one platoon of infantry which had fallen back. When the company was finally forced to withdraw because of the penetration of another platoon, Lieutenant Brantley, despite heavy enemy mortar and small arms fire, remained with rear elements continuing to adjust artillery fire onto the enemy until he was seriously wounded. The gallantry displayed by Lieutenant Brantley reflects great credit upon himself and upholds the highest traditions of the Military Service of the United States.
