The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Captain (Field Artillery) Hugh W. Brady (ASN: 0-117877), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Headquarters Battery, 38th Field Artillery Battalion, 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy on 27 and 28 November 1950, near Kunu-ri, Korea. The artillery positions of the 15th Field Artillery Battalion were infiltrated and subsequently came under heavy enemy small arms and mortar fire. The battalion was ordered to withdraw. Captain Brady, with complete disregard for his own safety, placed himself at a critical road junction which was under heavy mortar and machine gun fire and organized the defense of this road junction preventing the enemy from occupying it and allowing the battalion to withdraw. He then placed himself at the rear of the Battalion and organized its defense during the withdrawal. In spite of heavy enemy fire he remained in an exposed position at the rear of the battalion throughout the night directing the rearguard action. His organization and defense of the rear elements during this operation was the direct cause that enabled his battalion to withdraw to a position from which it continued to support the infantry. The gallantry displayed by Captain Brady reflects great credit upon himself and upholds the highest traditions of the Military Service of the United States.
