The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Private William J. Bradley (ASN: US-52059466), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company B, 38th Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 1 September 1951 in the vicinity of Mandae-ri, Korea. On that date Private Bradley’s squad, while attacking an enemy-held hill, came under intense enemy artillery and small arms fire. However, Private Bradley continued the attack, successfully leading his men to the top of the hill. Once they had gained the top, he and his men were immediately pinned down by enemy machine gun fire from a neighboring hill and became the object of heavy enemy artillery fire. Private Bradley, with utter disregard for his personal safety, exposed himself to enemy observation and fire while directing his men to cover and encouraging them to return the enemy fire. At this time Private Bradley was fatally wounded by artillery fire. The gallantry in action displayed by Private Bradley reflect great credit upon himself and the military service.
