The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant First Class James A. Boyd (ASN: RA-11148312), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company E, 9th Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy on 2 March 1951, in the vicinity of Chungji-ri, Korea. On that date his company had engaged the enemy in a fierce firefight but due to a threatened encirclement, was forced to break contact and withdraw. Later that day, Sergeant Boyd led several comrades in a daring attempt to evacuate wounded men who had been left behind. Although subjected to intense enemy mortar and small arms fire, the group carried the wounded to safety. After safely evacuating the casualties, Sergeant Boyd organized carrying parties to re-supply his company with vital ammunition and to search for other wounded. After insuring that there were no more wounded men left behind, he remained in an exposed position, delivering effective covering fire while his carrying party withdrew. The initiative, courage, and devotion to his comrades displayed by Sergeant Boyd reflect great credit upon himself and uphold the highest traditions of the Military Service of the United States.
