The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant John Bogdan (ASN: RA-32177378), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company F, 23d Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy on 19 September 1950 in the vicinity of Changnyong, Korea. Company F was engaged in attacking a numerically superior enemy force well-entrenched on high ground overlooking the Naktong River. During the assault, the enemy emplaced a heavy machine gun on commanding ground to the company’s flank and its accurate enfilading fire inflicted several casualties upon the attacking elements. Sergeant Bogdan, with complete indifference for his personal safety, voluntarily started to crawl toward the enemy emplacement. During his advance he was wounded, but nevertheless tenaciously continued to push forward until he reached a position from where he hurled hand grenades so effectively that he destroyed the hostile weapon and its crew. His fearless action relieved his company of heavy enemy pressure and enabled it to continue its advance to its objective. The gallantry displayed by Sergeant Bogdan reflects the highest great upon himself is in keeping with the fine traditions of the military service.
