Headquarters, 2d Infantry Division, General Orders No. 49 (February 24, 1951)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Captain (Infantry) John L. Blackwell (ASN: 0-36378), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Headquarters, 1st Battalion, 38th Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy on 28 November 1950 in the vicinity of Unbong-dong, Korea. On that date he organized a task force of five tanks and one Republic of Korea rifle company and led it in a vigorous and successful attack on a well organized and strongly emplaced enemy roadblock which had cut off the withdrawal of his battalion. With complete disregard for his personal safety and with inspiring gallantry, he dismounted from the tank he was riding and personally led the company of Korean soldiers through heavy enemy mortar, automatic weapons, rocket and grenade fire in a frontal assault on the enemy positions and against a group of the enemy who were attempting to close in and destroy his tanks. His heroism and outstanding leadership resulted in the destruction of the hostile roadblock and permitted the orderly withdrawal of his battalion. The gallantry displayed on this occasion by Major Blackwell reflects the highest great upon himself is in keeping with the fine traditions of the military service.
