Headquarters, 2d Infantry Division, General Orders No. 292 (July 13, 1951)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Joseph R. Bixler (ASN: RA-13297058), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company C, 9th Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy on 2 June 1951, in the vicinity of Inje, Korea. On that day his company had attacked and secured Hill 451. A sudden counterattack was launched by the enemy. Although wounded at the start of the counterattack, Private Bixler ignored his painful wound and remained in his position, delivering effective rifle fire on the enemy. When his ammunition was exhausted, he defended his position with accurately thrown grenades. Only when the enemy was driven off did he leave his position for medical aid. Private Bixler’s gallantry reflects great credit upon himself and upholds the highest traditions of the Military Service of the United States.
